Know Your Breast Health and Family History
Breast self-exams, regular breast exams with your healthcare provider starting at age 20 and regular mammograms starting at age 40 are all important to breast health. It is also important to know your health history and, if possible, your family’s health history.
Are you at a Higher Risk
One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Your risk for breast cancer is higher if you have a mother or sister with breast cancer, ovarian cancer or a mutation in their BRCA-1 or BRCA-2 genes. Our Risk Assessment and Prevention Program (RAPP) currently helps more than 1,000 patients with risk assessment and
prevention strategies. For more information about RAPP call 443-481-5300.
Mammogram Guidelines – Screening at 40
Studies have proven that mammography screening reduces breast cancer deaths in women ages 40 to 49 by nearly 30 percent. Most major medical organizations concerned with breast health, including
the American College of Radiology, now recommend that women begin getting a regular mammogram at age 40. Talk to your doctor about earlier screening if your mother or sister had breast cancer.
