New Year New You

• January 22nd, 2017 •

Over the holidays, I was checking out what was on Netflix and came across a documentary on British Vogue.  It’s a fantastic 2-episode documentary following Alexandra Schulman, British Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief as she goes about her day making Vogue the successful magazine that it is.  She is my new hero!  If you love fashion, love England..this is a must-see!!! (I won’t spoil it for you)

Fast forward to this past weekend, I visited Barnes & Noble for inspiration and found the latest British Vogue was on the newsstand and there was Ashley Graham the cover model for January!

She is a 29, size 18 and works out 3 times a week; a mixture of weightlifting, Pilates and shadow-boxing which she claims is good for her waist.  She does not apologize for her size!!  Woot!  Woot!!!

British Vogue’s message is undeniable EXIST IN PORTRAITS for your loved ones.  It doesn’t matter what size you are! Ashley Graham maintains a healthy lifestyle by exercising 3 times per week and by eating healthy.  She is embracing who she is and because of that, she is a trailblazer.

We, at Visual Concepts Photography in Davidsonville, Maryland,  believe in empowering the every-day woman and making her look and feel like a VOGUE model!! Happy Thanksgiving

• November 24th, 2016 •

It all started with my wanting to photograph something for a Facebook Thanksgiving card.  I grabbed my camera and went out to explore in my yard.  Then I saw it, lying on the ground face up.  The light was hitting it just right.  The perfect maple leaf.  And, then the memories flooded back to me of days gone by: my Canadian childhood in a pulp and paper mill town in northern New Brunswick, Canada where maple trees adorned the streets everywhere.  It’s what brings me back home to a care-free time, a time that was innocent, fun and adventuresome.  Some would say we were poor, some would say we were rich, but all would say we had a fabulous life growing up on a street that welcomed so many kids.  It was just before the television era so we made up our own entertainment as we went along.  We played Cowboy and Indians in the local wood, we spent summers riding our bikes to the local river where we swam for hours and hours and we made mud pies from the banks of the creek that ran behind our houses.  We stayed out until it was dark and heard our parents calling out for us to retreat to the safety of our home and the hot suppers that awaited us all.

When I see the glorious colors of the maple leaf, I am always reminded of how my favorite season was upon us and my next favorite season was soon to follow with the promise of cold days and lots of ice skating at the local lagoon and later an outdoor rink within walking distance of where I grew up.  Whenever I smell a wood-burning stove, I am always reminded of the little hut where we gathered to thaw out our frozen fingers and toes.

We never wanted for friends.  They were always there whenever they needed someone to hang out with.    We all knew each other’s families; we visited each other’s homes often.  We knew who made the best donuts, the best pies, and the best candy apples and had the best garden to steal a carrot or two.  Our parents treated each of us like their own.  We looked out for each other.  We felt safe, we felt loved, we felt nurtured.  We had little, but we had so much.  We were so rich.

So, on this Thanksgiving Day, I thank my family, my Chaleur St gang, (you know who you are!) my friends’ parents..all who helped shape me into the person I am today and to say “Thank You” for the memories that I treasure with me all the days of my life!

Children Photography Sessions

Visual Concepts Photography in Davidsonville, MD (Greater Annapolis area) is in full swing!!  In this video, fall is celebrated in this family by William’s annual photo session at our farmhouse.  I have had the privilege of photographing William since he was a baby and every year brings a new milestone!

This year, William was very chatty and insisted that the tractor really and truly belongs to him but, of course, it’s on loan to me for safe keeping.  We are both in agreement on that one so when he happens to see a photo of a tractor on my Facebook page, he will claim it truly belongs to him!!

This was the first year he saw the swing so that was a huge hit.  In the video, you can see him exclaiming, “I am having so much fun!”  We traveled up to the barn and explored the areas and then settled back in the garden.  Here is where William is happiest for he can explore our pond for frogs and visit our Secret Garden!

I hope you enjoy the video of William’s photo session and I hope it will entice you to make memories to last a lifetime!!

ABOUT MAGGIE (in her own words)

I was 23 years old and a ballet dancer with the Joffrey Concert Group in NYC when I was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer which put my career on hold
I was a member of the Joffrey Concert Group in NYC when I was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer in June 2014. I was only 23 years old and had no risk factors for breast cancer other than being female. Results from a subsequent genetics screening showed that I did not carry the genes linked to breast cancer.

I had a large, aggressive tumor that grew very quickly and spread to my bones and lymph nodes. I moved back home to be with my family and began treatment at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland.

Fortunately, my type of breast cancer (positive for Her2, ER & PR) responds very well to the drug Herceptin. My tumor began shrinking after my first chemo treatment on 7/1/14 and continued to shrink until it was completely gone. The pathology report following my double mastectomy on 12/26/14 found no cancer in either breast or lymph nodes. I had a pathological complete response. Six days after surgery, I was back in the studio working to regain my strength, stamina, and technique. I hope to return to dance in NYC again.

Once breast cancer metastasizes to another body part, it is very, very difficult to know if all the cancer has really left the body after treatment. Tiny, undetectable cancer cells could be lurking dormant in the body. If these cells come to life, the cancer will return. That is why metastatic (stage 4) breast cancer is considered incurable. To keep the cancer cells dormant, I will remain on medications for the rest of my life or until a cure is found. The cost of these medications is enormous: $4,000 to $9,000 per dose, per drug. I receive two drugs every 3 weeks, and a 3rd drug every 4 weeks. I hope to join a clinical trial testing a treatment that will keep my cancer from returning.

The Art of Home Staging

• August 17th, 2016 •

Selling a house is a big deal!  You want to sell it and sell it for the right price.  However, most sellers don’t consider a stager.  The value of a stager in this writer’s opinion is paramount in this day and age.  That is why I am so passionate about my friend, Deb Goode’s recent article that appeared in the latest issue of “Annapolis Home.”  You will agree with me once you read the article and view the photos that Deb is the BEST stager in Annapolis and Anne Arundel County!!

Annapolis Home Article:  The Art of Home Staging

by:  Deb Goode of A Goode Start Decorating and Home Staging

You ask, “What’s the difference between interior design and home staging?”  Although these two professions seem to have similarities, they are, in reality, worlds apart. An interior designer’s role is to create a home that reflects the owner’s style, tastes, and preferences. A home stager aims to turn your property into something that lots of people will like so that it will sell faster and for the best price possible!
Home staging sometimes involves reducing or reorganizing the owner’s belongings and rearranging them. It’s not a mystery that potential buyers like to see clean, well-defined spaces, so clutter and the owner’s personal effects must be removed.

When a home is vacant, a stager provides furniture and accessories that will “show off” the best qualities of the home. The home stager’s objective is to transform the property so that it appeals to the widest range of prospective buyers.

Most buyers find vacant homes challenging because only 10% of us have the ability to visualize a space once furnished. To further complicate matters, today 97% of home buyers begin by searching the internet where empty rooms all look alike. Staging helps identify the purpose of a room, shows potential furniture placement, and most importantly, gives the room life!

My “before” and “after” pictures show an empty room and the same room that’s been “staged.” Here, I’m working with existing window treatments and wall color, so I designed the room around that color scheme.  Here’s how I designed this Great Room.

First, I establish a “focal point” (the one area in the room that draws the eye); in this case, it’s the fireplace and magnificent artwork.  To embellish the fireplace but not overwhelm the art, I added topiaries and gold accessories.

Second, I placed a seating arrangement across from the TV – still close enough to the fireplace to enjoy the warm ambiance of a fire.  I also created a conversation area by placing the loveseat against the wall and flanking it with slipper chairs.  I added the neutral “eyelash” area rug to unify this area.

Third, I used a monochromatic color scheme to add elegance and accentuate the gold and black silk window treatments and pale yellow walls.  Typically, I use neutral-colored furniture for staging because it blends best with variously-styled homes.  In this room, I chose a cream loveseat and beige slipper chairs.  The black and gold accent pillows, as well as the leopard throw, coordinate with the drapes and add contrast–all of which contribute to the room’s unity, rhythm and balance.

Finally, for finishing touches, I added tall, iron candlesticks, a tray on the coffee table and a few topiary balls to coordinate with the topiaries on the mantel. Then, I added accessories on the other table to give the room a complete look.  The starburst mirror over the loveseat reflects light and color but doesn’t detract from the other pieces in the room.

Remember, a well-staged home helps buyers envision themselves living in the property which will lead to a faster and more profitable sale.
